“My ten-year-old daughter’s pregnancy test was positive. When her biological father showed up at the hospital, he pointed straight at my husband and said, ‘Arrest him.’”
Two hours earlier, Sophie had been sitting between Daniel and me in the emergency room, gently swinging her sneaker-covered feet beneath the chair.
She looked far too small for the adult blood pressure cuff fastened around her arm.
For six weeks, she had been complaining about headaches. At first, they happened after school. Then they started waking her before sunrise. That Monday morning, she threw up during math class and walked straight into a row of lockers while heading to the nurse’s office.
Her pediatrician told us to bring her to the hospital.
“She’s also been developing pretty early,” I told Dr. Lena Ortiz. “She needed her first training bra before most of the girls she knows. I figured she just took after me.”
Dr. Ortiz asked Sophie a series of questions, then ordered blood tests and a urine sample.
Nobody said anything about a pregnancy test.
Twenty minutes later, Dr. Ortiz came back without the relaxed smile she’d had earlier.
“Mrs. Morgan, could I speak with you privately?”
“You can say whatever you need to say in front of Daniel.”
Her eyes shifted toward my husband.
“I need to examine Sophie alone first.”
Daniel stood immediately.
“Of course.”
He kissed Sophie on top of the head, but she reached out and grabbed his hand.
“Don’t go.”
“I’ll be right outside, bug.”
Once the door shut, Dr. Ortiz pulled a chair over beside Sophie’s bed.
“Sophie, I need to ask you some uncomfortable questions. You’re not in any trouble.”
Sophie glanced at me.
“What kind of questions?”
“Has anyone ever touched you underneath your clothes?”
Her feet stopped moving.
“No.”
“Has anyone ever told you to keep a secret about being touched?”
“No.”
My heart started hammering.
“Why are you asking her things like that?”
Dr. Ortiz turned the computer screen so Sophie couldn’t see it.
“Her urine pregnancy test came back positive.”
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the hum of the air conditioner.
Then I laughed.
Not because anything was funny. Because what she’d said couldn’t possibly be real.
“She’s ten years old.”
“I understand.”
“She still sleeps with a stuffed bunny.”
“A test can sometimes be incorrect. We’re confirming it with bloodwork.”
All the color had drained from Sophie’s face.
“Am I going to have a baby?”
I pulled her tightly against me.
“No. They’ve made a mistake.”
Hospital policy required them to contact both a social worker and Sophie’s other legal guardian. Daniel was no longer allowed back inside the room.
Eric arrived half an hour later.
He rushed through the doors so fast that a security officer followed close behind him down the hallway. Daniel stood as soon as he saw him.
“What happened?” Eric demanded.
Daniel lifted both hands. “Let the doctor explain it.”
Eric looked through the window and saw Sophie sobbing against my shoulder. Then his eyes landed on the social worker sitting beside her bed.
Something in his expression shifted.
“No.”
“Eric—”
“You live under the same roof as her.”
Daniel took a step backward like someone had punched him.
“I have never hurt Sophie.”
Eric pointed directly at him.
“Arrest him.”
A nurse quickly pulled the curtain closed, but Sophie had already heard everything.
She slipped out of my arms and ran toward the door.
“Dad, stop!”
Eric tried to come inside. The security officer blocked his way while the social worker guided Sophie back toward the bed.
Daniel remained frozen in the hallway.
Sophie pressed both of her palms against the glass.
“He didn’t do anything!”
Dr. Ortiz returned holding a printed laboratory report. She closed the door behind her.
I studied her face, desperate to see some sign of reassurance.
“The urine test was wrong, right?”
She didn’t respond immediately.
“We repeated the test using Sophie’s blood sample.”
My stomach twisted.
“And?”
“The result is positive.”
Sophie began shaking her head over and over.
“But I’ve never even kissed anybody.”
“I believe you,” Dr. Ortiz told her.
Outside the room, Eric was still yelling at Daniel. Everyone in the hallway had turned to stare at the man they already assumed had done something terrible to my daughter.
Dr. Ortiz lowered her voice.
“The laboratory tested the sample twice. Sophie has a significant level of pregnancy hormone in her bloodstream.”
I grabbed the side of the bed.
“What happens next?”
“We need to perform an ultrasound immediately.”
“To look for the baby?”
Dr. Ortiz glanced at Sophie, then turned her eyes back to me.
“To find out whether there’s actually a baby at all.”…
