Elara stood at the edge of a clearing

Elara stood at the edge of a clearing, her silver cloak billowing in the wind that carried the scent of crushed moonflowers and something darker: ancient blood.
She adjusted the strap of her dagger pouch, feeling the weight of destiny settling onto her slender shoulders like armor.
“You’re early,”
a voice called from behind her.
Elara turned to see Kaelen stepping through ferns that seemed to part at his approach. His hair,
the color of midnight poured into water,
was braided with silver filigree a mark of the Forest Walkers,
guardians who protected the boundary between worlds.
He wore leather armor etched with protective runes that shimmered faintly, like captured starlight trapped in ink.
“Kaelen,” she said,
her breath catching.
“You came.”
He approached slowly, stopping three paces away as was custom among their people.
The Forest Walkers believed that proximity to another soul carried weight every heartbeat another burden shared, every secret another potential wound. But Elara had walked the path with him for years, from their humble beginnings in the village of Oakhaven to this precipice of destiny.
“I did come,”
he said finally,
stepping into her space without asking permission.
This breach of etiquette sent a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the chill of the coming storm.
“The Council has called an emergency meeting. The Crimson Forest is changing.”
Elara’s eyes narrowed.
“Changing how?”
“In ways we did not anticipate,”
Kaelen replied, his voice dropping to a whisper.
“The tree calls are becoming screams.
And the elders say the pact we swore with the Moon Queen the one that binds us both may be breaking before our time is up.”
Their eyes met, and there was in that gaze an old intimacy born of shared silence,
of watching each other grow from callow youth into burdened guardians, of love that had bloomed not in passion but in quiet understanding.
They were husband and wife by the standards of the mortal world, though the Forest Walkers would never formally acknowledge it their bond was too dangerous to bind by ceremony.
“The village,” Elara said softly.
“What will they think?”
“They will fear,” Kaelen admitted.
“But I told them you deserve to know. This is not just about Oakhaven anymore.”
Before she could respond, the wind died abruptly.
The silver filigree in his braid dimmed, then flared with an intensity that made her cover her eyes.
From the canopy above,
a single red leaf drifted down not falling, but *suspended* in air, rotating slowly on its own axis.
“The time has come,” Kaelen whispered. “The Moon Queen awaits us.”
Elara took his hand, feeling the pulse of two lifetimes beating as one beneath his skin.
She did not ask what lay ahead they would know together. The Forbidden Forest had always been their home,
and if it called them now,
it meant they were needed before their time.
Before love could guide them into something greater than themselves,
or before fear could tear them apart.
As they stepped through the veil of trees together,
hand in hand, the first chapter of their destiny began to turn,
and the moonlight above them fractured like glass on water.
